Cherry Picker Hydraulic Kit

Many machines we see today, from the dentist chair to the excavator and wave pool, use hydraulics to make movement happen. Hydraulics is one of the most useful inventions humans have come up with to help us move and lift things. A hydraulic system can transmit power virtually anywhere. With the flick of a handle, a small hydraulic jack can lift tons of weight!

The hydraulics of a large machine usually has a very complicated system of pumps and valves which push oil through hoses connected to pistons, that push and pull levers to dig earth, lift heavy things or platforms.

These kits use the principles of hydraulics to show how we use these machines in everyday life. Since water compresses very little, the syringes, when filled with water, give a strong and positive action to the lever it is attached to. When assembled, each kit illustrates a simple machine and the use of levers. They can be lead off points for students to get ideas to make their own machines! They are ideal for a youngster 10 and over to build on his/her own, or an 8 year old with a bit of help from an adult.

These kits make great gifts for the young person who is interested in wooden toys that are rich in learning and fun to use after they are made.

Widely used by hydro and telephone companies (and anyone who wants to get a cat out of a tree) this is an excellent model showing levers and hydraulics.

Towering over two feet high (60 cm) when fully extended, the platform stays level all the way up and down. And it swivels side to side! Great fun for moving Lego people around, (sorry, not included) or taking a pet mouse for a ride (may be included, check the box carefully).

Easy to assemble in an hour or two, this kit uses three hydraulic lifts attached to a series of handles which push the pistons.

To make this kit you will need:

  • A pair of strong scissors
  • Glue
  • Some water and food colour
  • A small clamp - or large paper clip
  • Small Robertson screwdriver

This is an excellent kit as a lead off for students to think about how levers work in the world. It is also great fun for the platform lift enthusiast, and kids who are into making machines that move.

Each joint is pre-drilled for pegs and each piece pre-cut to exact measurements for a very strong model.

  • Kit comes with easy-to-follow instructions
  • Comes with information about levers and simple machines.
  • Easy to make in an hour or two.

You don't need to cut any wood! Some parental involvement may be needed to help wrap thin wire around the handles (for children under 10).
